Like many, I flatline at home in the cold of the New Zealand winters. While watching my fifth Islamic Circle Dancing video (highly recommended), the urge to go back to Indonesia quietly tickled the back of my mind like a 90’s anthem on that NOW 5 CD. The goal being to skip a few months of the grey seasons, and document it all so I can make a killer scrapbook for the grandkids. When I return, people will question whether I had my hair tips frosted (ode to J.T), or attended some rigorous sun bed sessions.

Throw four thin & pale city kids in a seething mass of world class surf, parties, and over-confident locals, the bar yarns write themselves. Reef cuts (scooter grazes) down the arms make it easy for one of the fellas to spin a few shameless lines to that pretty lady across the room with her corn braids and harem pants – they just ain’t gonna mention that night spent curled naked around the toilet, slurring to the god(s) above that they’ll never drink another ‘Tanger again.

On the lay days when the waves are lacking, the remote islands left us with little idea of what to do next. Should I go get my fourth Cornetto of the day? Should I shave my head? Should I shave my legs? Take these hair clippers out of my hands. In a place with golden sands and sapphire blue waters, there are afternoons you should just go have an emotional beach walk of self-reflection. Chuck in ya headphones, find your Dawson’s Creek theme tune, and begin to sadly reminisce on the glory days when they gave out most improved trophies.

Your jokes may be lost on the Scandos, like your parents on social media, and the Brits might ask whereabouts in Australia your from (just the New Zealand part hey), but there’s a lot of value in those relationships you make along the way. How long are you here for? What do you do back home? Do you like music? Yeah New Zealand. Yeah Lord Of The Rings. Classic, mates as.

Indonesia is aptly named the land of smiles. A land where road hazards involve rogue chickens or bees to the face, clouds of bats swarming make for alternative bird watching, the most people on a scooter wins, and yoga teachers still punch durries like miners in the prospecting days. Above all, remember that even in the places you can’t wait to get out of, there’s always a bit of sun on those cloudy days.
